Choosing Colors for Your Handfasting Cord

Updated: Mar 24

Choosing the correct colors for your handfasting cord to properly represent your union can become an overwhelming task. I've put together this blog post to break down the symbolism of each color and their traditional uses in cords.

White represents purity, devotion, peace, concentration, and meditation. It is often used to represent new beginnings and a clean, fresh start for a couple.

Red represents passion, love, lust, strength, courage, and assertiveness. A red ribbon is a pledge to work together to overcome hardships and prosper together.

Pink represents romance, unity, happiness, harmony, and love.

I like to use pink and red together in my cords, symbolizing a balance of passion and romance

Blue in general is a color of loyalty, fidelity, and good communication. It is a calm and confident color.

Dark blue represents strength, longevity, honor, and devotion.

Light blue represents study and learning. A light blue ribbon is a pledge to learn from each other and grow together. Light blue also represents loyalty in marriage as well as in families. You can use light blue ribbons to help bring each spouse's family closer together.

Light blue and white ribbons are symbolic of the colors of the sky and clouds and can be used to show that there are no limits to your happiness.

Light blue and dark blue ribbons are a pledge of truthfulness - that you may always honor your vows.

Vivid blue represents protection and perseverance.

Purples and violets represent progress, power, piety, and sentimentality. These colors are also symbolic of mystery and romance. A purple ribbon may denote the hope that you will always have more to discover about each other and never grow bored in your relationship. Purple is also the color of royalty. A purple ribbon could be a promise that your union will always be worthy of respect.

Lavender is representative of cleansing and spiritual healing.

White and lavender ribbons could be used to show a fresh start and a time of healing together from old wounds.

Indigo represents wisdom, spiritual direction, and intuition.

Green and yellow ribbons are symbolic colors of luck and optimism - that you may look forward to only happy accidents.

Yellow represents charm, harmony, confidence, joy, and balance. A yellow ribbon is symbolic of the sun - that your union may be warm. It is symbolic of light - that your union may serve as a beacon of hope to those in sorrow. Yellow is a happy color and is very common in handfasting cords.

Ribbons of gold and green represent the colors of wealth, prosperity, and abundance.

Orange represents plentifulness, kindness, encouragement, and attraction. Like yellow, it is a color symbolic of warmth. An orange ribbon denotes that your union may be cheerful.

Brown represents the earth, home, and grounding. A brown ribbon denotes that your union is dependable and grounded in reality. It's used to represent a desire for a comfortable and joyous household. It's a pledge that you are going to put a lot of effort into making your union work.

Ribbons of brown, green, and gold represent a happy, healthy, and prosperous union.

Black represents protection, wisdom, empowerment, vision, and success. Black is a color often used in protective magic. It absorbs negative energies. A black ribbon is a pledge to support your partner on a path of positivity and fulfillment. It is a promise to protect each other and keep each other safe. I think it's very sweet and I love incorporating black into my cords.
